The Walking Dead: An Introduction To Michonne & The Governor
Many of you who watched the season finale of AMC’s The Walking Dead, may have been in awe at the hooded character who saved Andrea in the forest. If you’re unfamiliar with the comic, you’re going to get VERY familiar with one of the COOLEST characters in the series!
It was the moment readers of the comics had been waiting for. There was speculation on whether Michonne (the BAD ASS character of the Walking Dead) would even make an appearance in the television series. Rumors swirled that she’d make an appearance season 3, but speculation was laid to rest during the season finale when she made her cameo appearance at the end of season 2.
Although the television series strayed from the graphic novel a bit, producers opted to introduce the character into the show. Many of us thought Andrea was a goner as she was down to her last breath, but the shadowy hooded figure who carried two zombies on a leash was the heroin!
Who Is Michonne?
What makes Michonne appealing is she’s an African-American heroin (which we don’t often see in comics) who can kick some major ass! She’s strong, independent, and takes no nonsense. Did I just describe the the modern day black woman?
In the comics, she roams the land with the deceased jawless, walking carcasses that is her boyfriend and his best friend. In her former life she was an attorney who lost her children. Michonne has a twisted connection with another character in the comic named “The Governor”
With no official word on what role he will play in the television series, there has been confirmation that him and Michonne will be in season 3. In the comics, the Governor is a sick twisted man who runs a Gladiator Style tournament from the town of Woodbury. That was until Michonne escaped!
The comic creator and Walking Dead television executive producer recently sat down with TVGuide to discuss the roles of both Michonne and the Governor in the television series:
Michonne’s appearance in the finale was the best-kept secret ever. Will she be similar or different from what we’ve seen in the comics?
“I can say that personality-wise, she’s the Michonne you know and love from the comic. You can definitely see, just in that one scene, pretty much everything that makes her cool is intact. She is definitely on her own. She is definitely a capable fighter. We will be dealing with her personality and her back story and all that kind of stuff in Season 3, but … this is going to be the character that people have been clamoring to see in the show.”
What can you say about The Governor?
“The Governor in the show is definitely going to be The Governor in the comic. While I think that people are going to like the character, I don’t think it will be because he is doing likable things. I don’t think it will be because he appears heroic. I think that he’s definitely going to be a character that people love to hate and are absolutely entertained by, but also somewhat terrified of. He’s definitely going to be a very important character and a very nuanced character. We are not going to be watering him down.”
Fans are counting down the days until the arrival of Fall. With the prison being the backdrop for Season 3, there’s no telling what direction the story will go in for the next season. If you thought there were some major deaths and twists in the second season, producers are hinting at BIGGER surprises for the next!
Michonne will be played by actress Danai Gurira
The Governor will be played by David Morrissey
